地处中国最大淡水湖鄱阳湖东南岸的江西万年县，是世界稻作文化的重要发源地之一。20世纪90年代，中美农业考古队在万年县仙人洞与吊桶环遗址进行考古发掘和研究时，发现了距今12000年前的人工栽培稻植硅石，由此将世界稻作起源时间由7000年前推移到12000年前。
“1998年我到美国访问讲学的时候，很多美国考古学界人士都知道这处罕见的世界级洞穴遗址。”耄耋之年的彭适凡，是江西省博物馆名誉馆长、原江西万年仙人洞与吊桶环遗址中美农业考古队中方副队长。他说，万年稻作文化是人类农业文明的重要组成部分，也是中国乃至全世界的文化遗产。
在长期从事农业文化遗产保护工作的中国科学院地理科学与资源研究所研究员闵庆文看来，农业文化遗产兼具经济、社会、文化、生态、科技等价值。万年的优势在于其悠久的稻作文化，要保护利用好农业文化遗产。
